First calendar year

First Winter Glaucous-winged Gull

December 2008
California, USA

Comment: Darker than average, but well within the range of a first-winter  Glaucous-winged Gull. Only the bill is really dark, the rest of the bird is uniform greybrown. There is no obvious contrast between the primaries and the rest of the plumage. Note also the bulk appearance and short primary projection beyond the tail.

Comment: An adult-like bird in most manners, but the extensive markings in the head and neck are associated with immature or near-adult birds (Reference #1). The bill pattern may also support that.

Comment: Adult in breeding plumage. The grey primaries are the same color or slightly darker than the mantle. It is a bulky species, with only a short primary projection beyond the tail. Note also the dark eye and rounded head profile.
